One term, however, has become impossible to avoid in the mattress world; “memory foam.” Exactly what is memory foam, how does it work, and is it worth the purchase? We wanted to know, so we did a little digging. Here’s what we found out, and also a breakdown of how traditional memory foam mattresses compare to a CordaRoy’s.
What is a Memory Foam Mattress?
It’s pretty easy to define a memory foam mattress. A memory foam mattress is a mattress that has no innersprings and instead creates support for the sleeper through layers of memory foam only. Defining exactly what “memory foam” is, is another story.
Different manufacturers have their own blends of memory foam, so you’ll get a different blend and possible a different feel across mattress brands. Along with different blends, you’ll get different fancy terms. Cool max, double extra firm, orthopedic, etc. are all words mattress manufacturers will use to describe their particular blend of memory foam. None of these are necessarily inaccurate or accurate; memory foam is memory foam.
One of the major disadvantages to owning a memory foam mattress is that they are traditionally hot to sleep upon, as they tend to trap air and disallow much air flow. Mattress manufacturers have found a way to sell over that too, however, with new and improved “cool foam,” that claims to feel just like standard memory foam but allow air to flow for a cooler night of sleep. We aren’t really sure if those claims are legitimate or not. Unless you remove some of the foam from a mattress it’s pretty hard to keep air flowing through it.
Memory foam works by sculpting to your body as you sleep, and re-sculpting to your body as you reposition during the night. Unlike a traditional mattress that cannot support every area of your body (think the low back arch while you are lying on your back) a memory foam mattress can cradle those hollows of the body and provide support where a traditional innerspring mattress cannot.
Undoubtedly, memory foam is the most popular mattress on the market right now. It provides a level of quality, comfortable sleep that a traditional innerspring mattress just can’t give, even with the thickest and most promising of memory foam toppers attached to it. Memory foam mattresses are also better at retaining their shape. In other words, you won’t have to worry about a massive divot in your mattress from a sleeping body a year after you’ve had it, or worse-that dreaded dip in the middle of the mattress. Your memory foam mattress should keep its shape and spring right back into place as you move around at night.

This, we feel, provides an even more comfortable night of sleep than a traditional memory foam mattress, as the foam has the ability to move around your body and also move around inside the outer cover of the mattress.
Possibly the biggest advantage (aside from the fact that a CordaRoy’s is a chair and a mattress) is that our memory foam mattresses are 100% breathable, and we don’t even have to use trendy mattress terminology to prove it. Unlike a traditional memory foam that is constructed from layer after layer of thick foam, a CordaRoy’s mattress allows for maximum air flow because the foam is cut into pieces and placed inside a breathable liner. You’ll likely never get too hot on a CordaRoy’s because you increase the amount of air flowing inside and outside of the bed every time you move or change positions while you sleep.
Lastly, we believe no matter what, you should be comfortable. If you aren’t comfortable on your CordaRoy’s, we aren’t doing our job. As such, it’s pretty easy to get a softer or firmer mattress depending on your taste, although we have found that 99% of the time our customers are completely satisfied with the mattress as is.
