How to Move a Large Bean Bag

Posted by Matthew Ressler on

Moving your giant bean bag doesn't have to be a workout. In fact, with the average person in the U.S. moving 11.7 times in their lifetime, it’s pretty likely you’ll be packing up your favorite bean bag chair at some point. The good news is moving doesn’t have to be a hassle.

Bean bags are the ultimate go-to for unwinding – whether you’re curling up with your favorite book, diving into a video game, or catching a quick nap. But when it comes time to move that oversized, comfy staple to a new home, it can feel like a bit of a challenge.

With the right tools and approach, moving your bean bag is easier than you think. So before you start stressing, here are some simple tips and tricks on how to move a large bean bag.

Step 1: Put Your Large Bean Bag in a Plastic Bag

Start by protecting your bean bag with a plastic bag to shield it from dirt and dust. We recommend keeping your bean bag in chair form in order to keep all pieces together. If you’re looking to save space, vacuum-sealing is a game changer. While we often think of vacuum packaging for preserving food, it works great for shrinking down bulky items like your giant bean bag, too.

Luckily, with CordaRoy's Plastic Vac Bag to the rescue, learning how to vacuum seal an oversized bean bag won't feel like mission impossible. Just roll your large bean bag in the vac bag, keeping the zipper on top. Then, unzip the cover about 6-8 inches.  This will help remove air from your bean bag which will be important for the next step!

Not only does this make your move quicker and easier, but it also protects your bean bag from dust, odors, and moisture. As a bonus, our vac bags will help you save tons of space when packing up for the big move!

Step 2: Use a Shop Vac

Now that your bean bag is in its plastic bag, you're almost ready to roll! But before you head out to your new home, let’s make it compact and easier to carry using your shop vac.

Start by placing the vacuum hose inside the cover and against the liner. This will help shrink your bean bag much faster, so you can hit the road in no time. Once the hose is in place, gather the plastic tightly around it and switch the vacuum on.

As you hold the bag in place with one hand, use your other hand to gently press and shape the bean bag into a smaller, tighter bundle. Keep at it until you’ve sucked out all the air, and just like that – your bean bag is compact and ready to be packed into a box.

Step 3: Place Your Bean Bag Inside of a Box

After you’ve compressed your giant bean bag in its plastic bag, the key is keeping it that way during the move. While placing it in a box can make it easier to move, it’s not absolutely necessary. CordaRoy’s Plastic Vac Bag is designed to hold your bean bag in its shrunken state, so if you can’t find a box big enough, you’re still in good shape.

However, if you prefer using a box, we recommend one from a store like U-Haul, as you’ll need at least a 48 x 24 x 24-inch box. This size box will be snug enough to prevent shifting but sturdy enough to handle any bumps along the way.

If using a box, once your bean bag is inside, carefully remove the vacuum hose and twist the plastic bag tightly to keep the air out. Then, tuck the ends of the plastic bag down on one side of the box. The bean bag will naturally expand a bit inside the box, which will actually help hold everything in place and keep it compact for your move.

Seal up the box with tape and you're all set! With your bean bag securely packaged, you can move it with confidence, knowing it will arrive in perfect shape. Wherever life takes you next, your cozy giant bean bag chair will be ready to welcome you home.

Step 4: Transport the Bean Bag

Now comes the fun part – getting your bean bag to its new home! Whether you’re moving across town or just down the street, it’s important to plan how you’ll transport your CordaRoy’s giant bean bag along with everything else. If it won’t fit in your car, think about carpooling with friends or family who have a bigger vehicle. You can also rent a truck or van to make sure there’s plenty of room for your bean bag and other belongings.

Step 5: Unpack and Allow to Expand

Once you’ve arrived at your new place, it’s time to let your bean bag breathe! Unpack it from the box and watch as it quickly starts to bounce back to its original shape. Keep in mind, though, that the poly foam inside might take a couple of days to fully expand.

Want to speed things along? Give your bean bag a little love by fluffing, massaging, and kneading any lumps from the outside. Feel free to start using it right away. Over time, it’ll only get softer and cozier as the polyfoam settles in.

Ready to Relax?

Moving a giant bean bag might seem like a challenge at first, but with the right steps, it’s really just another part of the adventure. By packing it up carefully, compressing it with a shop vac, and getting a little help from friends, your CordaRoy’s bean bag will be ready to settle into its new home in no time.

Once you’ve unpacked and let it expand, all that’s left to do is sink back, relax, and enjoy the comfort that only your favorite bean bag can bring. Whether you have a classic convertible bean bag chair from CordaRoy’s or our nearly 7-foot giant bean bag that fits 2+ people, moving it doesn’t have to be a hassle.
