How Long Does it Take for Foam to Expand

Posted by Matthew Ressler on

Imagine this: You've just received your eagerly awaited CordaRoy's bean bag or memory foam mattress. With anticipation, you carefully unbox it and slice through the plastic. It starts to expand, slowly unfolding into shape. But then, the process seems to pause. Questions bubble up in your mind – how long should it actually take for the foam to fully expand? What if it doesn't reach its full size and shape?

From the initial unboxing to the final, cozy form, we’ll cover everything you need to know about your new foam product. Whether it’s the time it takes to fully expand, tips to speed up the process, or solutions for when the foam seemingly stops expanding, we’ll guide you through every step of your foam’s transformation.

How Long Does it Take for Polyurethane Foam to Expand?

CordaRoy’s bean bags are stuffed with shredded eco-friendly polyurethane foam, also known as polyfoam. This material, renowned for its resilience and comfort, is the same type of foam used by pole vaulters, ensuring that it can withstand significant pressure while providing excellent support.

Given its low density, polyurethane foam can be compressed quite easily, which is ideal for shipping and handling. However, once you unpack your bean bag, you might wonder about the expansion time. Typically, it can take up to 3-5 days for the foam to fully expand. This timeframe allows the foam to gradually uncompress and regain its original shape, ensuring that your bean bag chair achieves the optimal level of comfort and fluffiness.

How to Set Up a CordaRoy’s Bean Bag

So you’ve just received your CordaRoy’s bean bag in the mail, and you’re ready to get it set up. Fortunately, the setup process is straightforward and doesn’t require any special tools. By just following a few simple steps, you’ll have your new convertible bean bag chair ready for lounging, reading, or simply relaxing in no time.

1. Take Out of the Package

Your CordaRoy's Bean Bag arrives in a compact, vacuum-packed state for convenient shipping. The first step is to unpack it. Here's how:

  • Open the Box: Carefully open the box to find two main components – the cover and the insert.
  • Unpack the Cover: The cover, which transforms the insert into a bean bag, is neatly packed in a clear plastic zipper pouch. Set it aside for now.
  • Unveil the Insert: The bean bag insert is tightly rolled and wrapped in multiple layers of plastic to protect it during transit.
  • Remove the Plastic Safely: You can use scissors to cut through the plastic layers, but be extremely cautious not to accidentally cut the bean bag insert. Alternatively, to avoid any risk of damage, gently pull the plastic layers apart with your hands.

2. Fluff to Activate the Foam

After you've removed the foam insert from its packaging, it will appear quite flat. This flat appearance is just temporary, due to the compressed state for shipping. Now, it's time to fluff your bean bag. This step is simpler with a helping hand, but if you're on your own, a bit of patience and maneuvering will do the trick.

Use the Taco, Sock, Rotate, Bounce method: one person holds the cover open while the other person folds the insert corner to corner (like a taco), slip the cover on (like a sock), rotate the insert onto one of its tips, and then bounce to let gravity expand the foam. This will further loosen and activate the foam.

3. Massage the Lumps

Initially, your bean bag might feel lumpy due to the compressed foam. These lumps are just the foam needing a bit of encouragement to break apart. Gently massage these lumps from outside the fabric. This helps to break down the foam into a softer state.

Rubbing the lumps against each other creates friction, assisting in separating them more effectively. Remember, you don't need to open the cover or touch the foam directly. Over the next few days, as you use the bean bag, the foam will continue to soften and expand.

4. Give it Time!

Your new CordaRoy's Bean Bag will be ready for immediate use, but it reaches its full potential with a little time. Although it's comfortable from day one, it may take 3-5 days, depending on the size of your bean bag, to fully expand and achieve peak fluffiness. With each day, you'll notice your bean bag becoming softer and more inviting as the foam fully expands.

How Long Does it Take For a Memory Foam Mattress to Expand?

The convenience of mattress shopping has improved over the years, especially with the rise of bed-in-a-box options. At CordaRoy’s, we offer two types of mattresses: the hybrid and the classic. When you order a mattress from us, it will arrive in a compact, vacuum-sealed package, rolled up tightly for ease of handling and transport. So how long until it’s fully expanded?

The time it takes for your CordaRoy’s memory foam mattress to expand fully can vary depending on factors like the density of the mattress, the temperature of the room where it’s being set up, and the specific materials used in its construction.

While your mattress might seem ready to sleep on within just a few hours after unpacking, we recommend giving it a full 3-5 days to expand completely. This will ensure your mattress reaches its full size and shape, maximizing its support and comfort.

How to Expand Foam

Expanding a memory foam mattress correctly is key to enjoying its full comfort and support. If you've just purchased a CordaRoy’s bed, understanding the right way to expand it will ensure you get the best out of your investment. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

1. Remove Your CordaRoy’s Bed From The Packaging

The first step in expanding your new mattress is to remove it from the packaging. Unroll it carefully and remove the vacuum-sealed wrapping. This will allow the mattress to start expanding and taking shape.

2. Expand the Mattress Over Time

Patience is important when it comes to foam expansion. Once you've unboxed your mattress, it will naturally begin to expand. Give it time to work its magic and slowly rise to its full size. This process can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the mattress type and room conditions.

3. Let the Foam Rest

After following these steps, it's time to let your new mattress rest. Avoid using the mattress during this initial expansion period. This rest period allows the foam cells to fully open up and regain their full size and shape, ensuring maximum comfort and longevity of the mattress.

4. Regularly Rotate the Mattress

To ensure even wear and prolong the life of your mattress, rotate it regularly. This practice is especially important in the first few weeks as it helps in evenly distributing the expansion and settling of the foam. Aim to rotate the mattress 180 degrees every few weeks initially, and then every few months thereafter.

How to Make Foam Expand Faster?

If you’re eager to enjoy your new memory foam mattress and want to speed up the expansion process, there are some things you can do. Memory foam responds well to certain conditions that can accelerate its expansion. Let’s take a look at some tips and tricks so you can enjoy your new mattress as soon as possible.

1. Warm Up The Room

Room temperature can significantly affect the expansion rate of your foam mattress. If your room is on the cooler side, the foam tends to expand more slowly. To hasten the expansion process, adjust the room temperature to a warmer setting. This warmth helps the foam cells to become more pliable and expand quicker. Ensure the room is comfortably warm, but not excessively hot, to create the ideal environment for your foam mattress to expand.

2. Apply Gentle Pressure

Another effective method to speed up the expansion of your foam mattress is to apply gentle, even pressure across its surface. You can do this by carefully walking on the mattress or gently pressing down on different areas with your hands. This encourages the foam cells to open up and expand more rapidly. It's important to be gentle and avoid using sharp or heavy objects that could damage the foam.

What to Do if My CordaRoy’s Isn’t Expanding?

Running into issues with your CordaRoy’s mattress or bean bag not expanding as expected can be frustrating. If you find that your product isn’t expanding to its full size, even after giving it the recommended time, there are a few steps you can take:

  1. Double-Check the Environment: Ensure that the room where the mattress is placed isn't too cold, as low temperatures can slow down the expansion process. Adjusting the room temperature to a warmer setting can help.
  2. Apply Gentle Pressure: Sometimes, applying gentle, even pressure across the mattress can help in breaking up the foam clumps.
  3. Give it More Time: In some cases, particularly in colder environments, the mattress may just need a bit more time than usual to fully expand.
  4. Contact Customer Support: If these steps don’t help, it might be time to reach out to CordaRoy’s customer support. Reach out to us at customerservice@cordaroys.com or by calling 352-332-1837

Can I Use My CordaRoy’s Before it is Expanded?

We get it - receiving a new mattress or bean bag chair from CordaRoy’s is exciting! You might be tempted to immediately dive into its comfort. However, when it comes to using your CordaRoy’s product before it's fully expanded, a little patience can go a long way.

Early use might result in uneven expansion or less than optimal support, which could impact the overall comfort and longevity of the product. Ideally, it’s best to give your CordaRoy’s the time it needs to expand completely.

If you find yourself needing to use your bean bag chair or mattress sooner than the recommended foam expansion period, that’s okay! You can enjoy your CordaRoy’s product at any time and rest assured that with normal use, the foam will continue to break down and become softer.
